Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen, Red Ripple, Gold Plated Lattice Overlay

£275.00

The Waterman 42 Safety Fountain Pen in Red Ripple hard rubber, featuring a gold-plated lattice overlay, is a highly collectible vintage writing instrument from the 1920s.

Waterman’s Ideal #2 14k gold ‘heart hole’ nib.
Body Material: Waterman’s iconic "Red Ripple" hard rubber (ebonite), known for its distinct striated red-and-brown pattern.
Overlay: Many of these gold-plated or gold-filled lattice and filigree overlays were crafted by specialised Italian jewellers and workshops during the 1920s to fit standard Waterman safety bodies.
Safety Mechanism: Features an internal helix mechanism that seals the ink inside when the nib is retracted, requiring the pen to be filled upright via an eyedropper while the nib is extended.
Please note: Original safety pens relied on an internal cork seal that typically degrades over time; modern restorations often replace or supplement the cork with precision O-rings to prevent leaking.
This pen will require servicing before use. The safety mechanism is loose and the tines of the nib cross over at the tip. The lower price reflects this.

Length closed: 117mm
Length open: 107mm nib retracted, 127mm nib out
Length posted: 159mm
